Economic burden of the postoperative management in peri- and/or intra-articular fractures of the lower extremities 45 Another strength of this study is that a bottom-up approach was used.32 Furthermore, there were no missing data in the follow-up. However, there were some limitations in terms of the interpretation of our data which has to be taken into account. First of all, the use of a questionnaire induces a risk of selection and recall bias. In addition, the time frame of 26 weeks may be too short to detect long term effects on productivity costs. Therefore, further research is needed to mitigate these limitations. Conclusion This prospective multicenter study reveal a substantial economic burden in monetary terms and effect on QoL of patients with peri- and/or intra-articular fractures of the lower extremities during 26 weeks follow-up. Total societal and healthcare costs are lower for the patients with a paid job relative to the patients without paid job.
