Jan Willem van den Berg is a psychotherapist at outpatient clinic De Tender in the Netherlands. His research and clinical interests converge on the topic of prevention of sexual offenses. From (t)his perspective, a community is best served by assessing and – through person-centered cognitive behavioral treatment – reducing risk of reoffending. As PhD researcher at the Institute for Family and Sexuality Studies at KU Leuven, Jan Willem aims to further improve the effectiveness of treatment programs developed for men with a history of sexual offenses. For this purpose, with his colleagues, he introduced the network-based model of risk of sexual reoffending (NBM-RSR) as a theoretical account of the causal processes by which dynamic risk factors give rise to the risk of sexual reoffending and contribute to sustained change in this risk.
